I grew up in Wilmette, a suburb of Chicago. In the summer we'd walk to the beach on Lake Michigan. My career started with Illinois Bell Telephone in Chicago, and moved to Los Angeles in the 80s. My old employer, AT&T returned to me when they bought the database company, Teradata, where I was working in 1994!
